Being aware of the common plumbing problems and solutions helps you know when to grab your tool box and when to call the plumber.

Let us look at water heater issues and how to fix them.

WATER HEATER ISSUES

Water heater issues are usually easy to spot. Some of the signs of water heater problem are:

■ Dripping water from the tank

■ Discolored water and noises coming from the water heater unit.

■ In some cases you could go to take that nice warm shower but instead get a freezing cold water.

 CAUSES OF WATER HEATER PROBLEM:

■ Mineral deposits can cause problems in water heaters. The deposits can reduce the efficiency of the water, thereby reducing the supply of hot water to the entire home.

■ Leaks are also another water heater problem. When there is constant leakage, the tank handily retains water.

■ Sediments can also cause strange sounds from your water heater. This is usually caused by heating or build-up of scale on heating elements.

HOW TO FIX WATER HEATER ISSUES:

■ Check the power light of the water heater. If the power light isn’t on, the unit won’t produce hot water.

■ Look at the temperature setting to ensure it wasn’t turned down accidentally.

■ If you are suspecting mineral deposits issues, then, drain the water tank to flush out the sediment.

■ If you observed a pool of water on the floor, kindly call a plumber, as the tank is likely leaking and may need to be replaced by a professional.

HOW TO AVOID WATER HEATER ISSUES:

■ Always check the pressure valve as often as possible.

■ Periodically flush the tank  to remove sediments.

■ Occasionally look round the tank to check for drips and leaks that could cause bigger problems.
